Give a Boost to Downsize DC
Keep the flame alive by sending a note today:
Esp., repeal Real ID, outright, now!
by Brian Wright
On Wednesday September 1, I got the note in my mailbox from Jim Babka of Downsize DC, that they would be suspending operations. The Coffee Coaster has long supported DDC, and makes a habit of posting its incisive commentaries. DDC has systematized the electronic delivery of messages to Congress—the messages, of course, insist on political liberty—on all the important issues of the day. Naturally, members of Congress ignore these freedom messages and continue to grow the state for the money power that has bought and paid for them.
But at least, with DDC, the gangster class knows we're on to them. And there is no denying the cautionary effect of a high pro-freedom message count on their pathetic little noggins: "Not only may we not be reelected if we pass this onerous bill, we may wind up "refreshing" the Tree of Liberty with our precious bodily fluids should the people rise and cast down the perpetrators of tyranny.
The letter from Jim Babka, 9/01/10
Back in June we said we were "burning our ships and marching inland,"
in order to do the One Sack infrastructure project.
We weren't kidding.
We really did "burn our ships."
We spent well above our budget to try and get the project done by
August 8. We had to do it. Our infrastructure problems were choking
our progress.
Well...
We succeeded with the project, but failed with the time-line. It took
us three extra weeks to get it done.
Which means that we busted our budget by more than we intended to
bust it. That would be a survivable problem except that...
We didn't get much response to our Dispatch yesterday which said that
we had finished One Sack, but that we were $6,400 in the hole.
I'm grateful to those who responded. We received about $1,000. But
the shortfall started sirens ringing here. We can't do our job if we
can't pay our bills.
The hole is still big enough that I must take
drastic action now.
That's why I'm suspending operations until further notice—until we
get our financial hole filled.
That means there will no Dispatches targeting Congress, or new
campaigns, or other projects, until we raise the remaining $5,400.
In yesterday's Dispatch, I was so full of hope -- excited about, and
seeing our bright future. THAT FUTURE, WITH 43 NEW TOOLS FOR GROWTH,
IS RIGHT AT OUR FINGERTIPS. But, if we don't raise the remaining
$5,400, quickly, then...
We really are in trouble. If you want to help us get back to work,
please contribute using our secure web form, or PayPal, now.

P.S. I know that there is someone reading this message who could
cover half of the shortfall -- or even all of what is needed. Today is
the day we need YOU!
P.P.S. If tax-deductibilty of your contribution is crucial, please
make your contribution to the Downsize DC Foundation.

Well someone must have stepped up. So thanks, whoever you are. For my own part, I'm so totally tapped out with the Great Recession that I can't even put a dollar in the Salvation Army bucket. [Though I still have a monthly PayPal contribution of $5 to DDC.]
The Grand Return
Babka comes back in style. After thanking those who made the resurrection possible, he suggests we put the pedal to the metal by making a special notification to our lessers that the time to repeal Real ID is now... or else (we will repeal you) [my words]. Anyway, here it is:
Quote of the Day: "Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom
must undergo the fatigue of supporting it." -- Thomas Paine
(1737-1809) Source: Common Sense, February 14, 1776
Thank you to everyone who made contributions over the past two days.
As a result of your support we've gone from being at our worst cash
position all year, to nearly our best.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Many of you are probably getting ready for your Labor Day weekend.
But we want you to know that we're back to work.
We'd also like to entice you to maybe do just a little "labor" with
us today. Here's the reason:
We have a four month streak going: We've exceeded the number of new
registrations and letters to Congress from the previous month. We'd
like to make it five months in a row by exceeding our August numbers.
But this will be a little difficult because we went two business days
without action-oriented Dispatches, and because we have this holiday
weekend. So, if you could send a letter to Congress today, you'll give
us a fighting chance at a five month streak.
More Progress!
Your letter could be about any of our campaigns, but we would
recommend doing one on our longest standing issue, and partially
successful campaign -- Repeal REAL ID. Yes, we've fought Real ID for
six years now, and it still has yet to be implemented! Resistance has
been strong.
Here's the letter I sent using our Educate the Powerful System
*** START LETTER ***
You may think it's your job to protect me from boogeymen.
You may think that because the 9-11 Commission recommended we have a
nationalized ID card, that we've just got to have some ID system to
fill the bill.
You may have even begun to think that dictators who required their
citizens to carry their "papers" from checkpoint to checkpoint, were
on to something.
But instead, I urge you to take your wisdom from Benjamin Franklin
who wrote, "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a
little Temporary Safety, deserve neither liberty nor Safety."
The problem with the Real ID Act is that it doesn't even provide
Temporary Safety. If a terrorist cell must forge identities to carry
out their nefarious mission, then, quite simply, they will.
And if you nationalize ID, you will make the forgery of this "super
ID" the holy grail of the black market... the very profitable focus of
considerable criminal energies.
I wouldn't be surprised if fake "Real
IDs" become incredibly easy to obtain, even common. Heck, you might
even be creating the very black market that will make a terrorist's
job easier!
This is an expensive, pointless, anti-American exercise. We've had
time to grow up since 9-11. Let's act like it, instead of trading
liberty for false security. I urge you to repeal the Real ID Act, and
replace it with NOTHING. We don't want "Real ID-lite."
If you take the lead on this, you will get a national following from
the considerably-effective, grassroots base of Americans who've kept
this bill from being implemented, first by the original May, 2008
deadline, and then by the revised December, 2009 deadline.
There's another deadline coming in May, and we're watching. Will you
be a hero for Essential Liberty?
*** END LETTER

Thanks again for your support. Enjoy your long weekend. And we'll see
you on the other side.

Back in the Saddle
Well, the boys are back and I'm glad to see it. As most know, my skepticism remains that the gang in Washington can reform. My best guess is they will need to be replaced. But while we still hang on to the existing corrupted system, it's nice to know Downsize DC is around to call the lessers on their crimes. And if Downsize DC reaches a membership of regular writers into the hundreds of thousands, the New Paradigm will have arrived.
