Main Street (2010):
Good little naturalistic thought provoker ___ 8/10

Why is this a good movie? Why do I regard it as a four-star when IMDb gives it a 4.8 ranking, equivalent to two stars? Well, except for the Firth hiccup on the Texan-authenticity meter—really difficult to understand for such a remarkable talent—the acting is stellar. And the characters they are acting out are real and believable; the writer takes no easy way out, either with misplaced romanticism or overwrought demonization of those who handle earth-unfriendly products in a less-than-candid manner. What results is then a series of rather deep, complex character studies: from Georgiana Carr to Harris Parker's mother (Margo Martindale) to, well, all the principals. That's what makes the film completely fascinating and worth multiple watches. [Full Review]

Doesn't anyone remember Vietnam? Am I the only person alive that remembers that Vietnam was a war contrived by Lyndon Baines Johnson all by himself? Vietnam was not an aberration of American foreign policy. It was the norm. Johnson put our ships into waters claimed by an unpopular regime and then went to war when that unpopular country, North Vietnam, presented an opportunity for Lyndon Baines Johnson to use as an excuse to start a shooting war. It was called the “Tonkin Gulf” incident. Presidents don't give a damn about the lives of our military. Our troops are pawns used by presidents to engage in wars invented by the foreign policies of their friends in the Washington establishment. G.W. Bush made a big show when visiting the injured in military hospitals but he was crying crocodile tears. What he was really saying silently was, “Thank you for giving me even more excuses to continue the war. The neo-cons and their friends need the profits and I relish the power that I can unleash against anyone whom I please at home or overseas. Give me more excuses.” [Full Column]

1. International Internet treaty signed by Europeans: In October 2011, before websites all over the internet voluntarily went dark in protest of SOPA, the internet censorship bill which was being considered by congress, Obama signed onto the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). He did so using his claimed authority to make 'executive agreements,' On 1/26/12 the EU signed onto ACTA without any debate. ACTA has become a reality far worse for internet freedom than either SOPA or PIPA ever even threatened to be. End ACTA now.


2. Phil Donahue on the foreign policy of a warrior nation: Phil Donahue, American media personality, writer, and film producer, had some common sense arguments against the next war. "You can hear the drums in the background," says Phil as we listen to any one [except Ron Paul of course] of the Presidential candidates. "You can't use an antiwar platform to get elected, so maybe that explains why it's so easy for us to go to war." Phil's right, but I certainly hope he's wrong...

ALERT: Colorado Proposes Flu Shot Mandate for Healthcare Workers: The Colorado Board of Health will hold their final hearing on February 15th on whether or not to adopt a new rule that would mandate healthcare workers get an annual flu vaccine. There is NO religious or personal exemption in the current version of the rule, despite the fact that these exemptions are available to schoolchildren. NVIC action item here.


4. Lying the world into wars: In 2002, recently declassified documents demonstrated that the Gulf of Tonkin incident of 1964 never happened. We went to war in Vietnam. In 1990 they told us that Iraqi soldiers were tossing babies out of incubators. It was a hoax, a LIE. We launched Operation Desert Storm. This video lists a good many more, how many manufactured hostilities can you name?


5. The best short video on the Web: Vote for Dr. No. (Here's an oldie but a bestie, I'm keeping this in Perkville until RP is elected president.) In just two minutes... In case anyone needs a reminder of what an epic train wreck Bush-Bama has been for the nation, here' a short video that sums it all up. It happens to have been made by a Ron Paul supporter. Ron Paul has faults, but his election would be revolutionary.

How to spot a false-flag operation: False flag operations are covert operations conducted by governments, which are designed to deceive the public in such a way that the operations appear as if they are being carried out by an enemy. Basically, it is a way for governments to 'play victim' in order to mask their own aggression. History is replete with such operations, but it's getting harder and harder for governments to conduct false flag operations because they've run the play over and over again. People are paying more attention now, and we've seen it before...

10. Statin drugs shown to increase risk of diabetes significantly: Yet media scramble to protect the drug's reputation. Interestingly, this is not the first study to reveal such a link. A 2011 study found that the risk of adult-onset diabetes is much higher in patients who take high doses of statin drugs. And a 2010 meta-analysis found that statin therapy of any dosage was associated with 9% greater risk of diabetes.
