Note: The Coffee Coaster Beaniegram contains synopses of writings—columns and book/movie reviews—of the week. It normally is posted and emailed on Sunday mid day. Toward the end of each week, a more journalistic newsletter, "Percolations," is emailed commenting on news and issues of the week. Last week's issue of Percolations is located here. — bw Guest Human-Interest Article Madre Mia! Even my adolescent boys loved it. On evenings when they had dates with girls whose reputations I deemed to be a tad short of virginal, I exercised my maternal duty and put extra garlic in the sauce, but had the wisdom to pretend ignorance: “Oh, I didn’t realize you were going out tonight, but I’m sure you can have a little of the Ricci Sauce anyway. No one will be able to tell.” Of course they wouldn’t be able to resist, and, to my great relief, reeked of garlic all night. (I had to be careful not to outsmart myself though, since I was taking a big chance that my sons would come home engaged if the date happened to be Italian.) My Column The following message was sent to the host and proprietor of the Small Government Alliance, Tim O'Brien. Tim had written a column (<— go here for the SGA original column and comments) which I posted on the Coffee Coaster in July 2010: "Constitutional Crisis: Where liberty lives and dies." That column made some statements regarding the 'income' tax and the 16th Amendment, which I felt needed to be clarified. So I commented and Tim replied to my comment. Pete Hendrickson also had the opportunity to read Tim's column, and felt compelled to write to his (and my) good friend, Tim, to present his case on the true nature of the 'income' tax in response. This is the open letter that Pete had sent to me from his federal political prison in Milan, Michigan, for posting publicly on the Coffee Coaster. Movie Review You'll find yourself getting all tensed up and saying, "How could we have done such a horrible thing on such a massive scale to millions of fellow human beings FOR NO VALID MILITARY REASON WHATSOEVER?!!! What got to me, in particular, was how widespread the practice was (and is) for rounding up any person, without charges, without suspicion of wrongdoing, without habeas corpus, without trial, without an interpreter, without reason... then, on the whim of a goon-for-hire—we know, after Abu Graib, that most of the atrocities committed by Americans in Iraq were (and are) performed by private contractors, not regular military—throwing that person into a dungeon and torturing him, often to death. Book Review So you can see Mr. T has, with extreme prejudice, determined to become the modern natural-remedy movement David to the federal government's various and sundry Goliaths. At this stage, I would give the score as David 2, Goliath 1. Kevin documents the evils and corruption of government officials and bureaucracies—especially the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)—and, more important, the murderous behavior of the food cartels (Big Ag), the big pharmaceutical corporations (Big Pharma), and the American medical orthodoxy (Big Sick) who use the coercion of the State as a funnel of wealth from us unto them.
