Guest Column: Whither the Independent?

Obsolete phrase: “independence of mind”

Like a car with high fins and long protruding tail lights, the phrase “independence of mind” has gone out of style, especially at colleges and universities where it ought to be the most profound ideal. The thugs have taken over.

As recently as 2008, a professor of Jurisprudence at King’s College London, Timothy Macklem, described the phrase in this fashion:

“Independence of Mind [explores] the ways in which the fundamental freedoms help us to achieve something even more profound, by enabling us to arrive at beliefs, convictions and voices of our own, so that we truly come to think, believe, and speak for ourselves in the rich and various ways that the freedoms then protect. Privacy grants us the distance and refuge from others necessary to develop views of our own; freedom of speech calls on us to imagine ways of expressing ourselves that are both true to the views we have developed and innovative in their own right; freedom of conscience enables each of us to create a distinctive rational personality in which to embed the convictions that we wish to treat as non-negotiable…” Continue reading →

Guest Column: Are Speech Rights Grinding to a Halt?

The suppression of ideas and the closing out of debate

Let’s start with an extreme case. A case that has been roiled in emotion for decades. A case that triggers people into making all sorts of comments.

At quora.com, there is an interesting Q and A. The subject is the Nazi holocaust.

The question is: Why is holocaust denial a crime in some countries?

One answer is offered by Olaf Simons, who states he is an “historian at the Gotha Research Centre.” Here is an excerpt:

“Anyone who tells you it [the holocaust] is ‘not real’ (because he has found something to support his doubt) is manipulating you with a political agenda.”

That’s quite a far-reaching assertion. It’s obvious that a) someone might come to the conclusion that the holocaust didn’t happen and b) he has no political agenda. Whether that person’s conclusion about the holocaust is true or false is beside the point. And even if that person did have a political agenda, why should his comments about the holocaust be suppressed? Continue reading →

Brian’s Column: Where Can I Do the Most Good? (Part 1 of 2)

Novi, Michigan. It came on suddenly, triggered I think by the invocation—in this WASPish crowd, always a nod to the Christian God—that meandered to an end by stating how we should always cherish our great friend, Israel. What?!

First—and I’ve felt this way about virtually all of the Republican meetings I’ve been to since becoming a precinct delegate roughly two years ago—what’s an invocation of faith in ‘God’ doing at a political meeting? This is America, where people’s religious beliefs are their own business so long as, “they neither break my bones or pick my pocket,” as our great sage and secular saint Thomas Jefferson put it.

Second, what is the state of Israel doing in a Christian invocation? Is the speaker trying to ward off accusations of excluding Jews? If so, why not say, let’s be nice to Jews… not let’s be nice to Israel? Then if we’re invoking kindness toward Jews, why not Muslims, Buddhists, humanists, and Great Pumpkinists? Which leads to the obvious conclusion that it’s best to dispense with religious observances in secular gatherings of this nature. If you want to solemnize the occasion, lead a moment of silence. … Let’s ring the bell for true people’s independent grand juries

Note: The following post started out as a letter to friends of liberty, where I express my deep frustration at always being on the defensive in our struggle against those who aim to commit tyranny upon us. I believe there is a better way, and that we have the seeds for an effective political method to put all would-be tyrants—federal, state, and local—in a corner and relentlessly pound them into fine dust. — bw

Every day if you’re an average freedom activist, you get inundated with requests from various organizations to stop the government from committing one crime against First Principles or another. Federal, state, local. Or to elect this one or that one, sign this petition or that one, you get the picture. And the crimes keep getting more and more severe: consider the recent CDC rule proposal that would forcibly detain, isolate, vaccinate, and quarantine any individual for ‘public health’ reasons.

The point is that the government(s) just keeps on committing (legislative-executive-judiciary, treasonous) crimes and lies and we the people are stuck in a mode of simply reacting. They act, with the immense resources at their disposal. And we REact, with about three people who really care and have time to spare after dealing with all the other government crimes and just trying to put food on the table. Think about that for a minute: you’re in a boxing match and instead of throwing punches you simply react to the punches being thrown by your adversary—duck, parry, rope a dope, run into the corner, etc.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS SORRY-ASS PICTURE, PEOPLE? WE ARE PLAYING THEIR GAME, WE ARE FALLING INTO THEIR TRAP (OF CONSTANTLY PUTTING OUT THOUSANDS OF FIRES THAT THEY SIMPLY INITIATE ON THEIR CRONY-CAPITALIST OR TAXPAYER-FUNDED WHIMS), AND WE ARE LOSING ON ALL FRONTS! Continue reading →

Michigan responds with complete refund of income tax incorrectly withheld

Note: This is a followup column to my original column two weeks ago, “The Elation of a First-Time Educated Filer,” attesting to the liberating power of the so-called Hendrickson Discovery (ref. Pete Hendrickson’s book, Cracking the Code)—simply on the occasion of filing! Now, I have a ‘victory’ to report.

First, the start of the good luck story

It was a strange day, yet a day any gambling man would have bought a lottery ticket…

Doing errands then winding up at the Novi post office, Thursday, May 5. Buying Media Mail stamps to send out my latest book to potential reviewers of stature… then returned to my car, an 1997 Mercury Villager that I’ve been holding onto for sentimental reasons, but I tell people it’s an investment. Turned the key. Click, click, click. Dead battery, snow cone sized load of corrosion on the posts. First good luck: it’s a day out of paradise: clear blue, cool breeze, no trace of toxic atmospheric aerosol spraying, 65 degrees.

Now more good luck: Right next door is my place of work, where I have a part time job as a med tech driver, also my manager is in. So he offers to come over there to jumper the car, using my cables. In the meantime, in a nearby parking spot, a nice fellow exits his car and asks if I need a jump, says he has a portable battery booster/jump starter. I say sure. Nobody has a wire brush, but I clean the goop off the terminals with paper towels as best I can, and the key turns it right over. Vrooom. Starts right up. Good Samaritan Guy points out that the gauge says my alternator is successfully charging, too. Continue reading →

Guest Column: Doreen’s Case Publicized in WND

When a federal court and the federal government ordered Doreen Hendrickson to sign a form under penalty of perjury that she believed to be inaccurate, the mother of two initially refused to comply.

Eventually, she obeyed but noted that the sworn statement was being made under duress.

Now, because of that decision, she is sitting behind bars for “contempt of court.”

A federal appeal is being considered in what sources called an “unprecedented” case, with arguments from both sides presented last month.

The case has broad implications for free speech and due process.

Hendrickson’s saga officially began in 2006, when the Internal Revenue Service claimed that refunds it had issued to her years earlier were mistakes, according to the family and official documents reviewed by WND. Continue reading →
