Guest Column: ‘Expose and Expunge’ Illegal Records on Citizens

Take action now to erase the DHS spy files
by Partnership for Civil Justice

Partnership Civil JusticeMost people are not aware that silently, but constantly, the government is now watching, recording your everyday travels and storing years of your activities in massive data warehouses that can be quickly “mined” to find out when and where you have been, whom you’ve visited, meetings you’ve attended, and activities you’ve taken part in…. This column comes from a mailing of Partnership for Civil Justice that fights the Grid, specifically the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its vast indiscriminate ‘spy files’ on American citizens.

Today’s headlines confirm what the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund and its supporters have been saying, “Intelligence Effort Named Citizens, Not Terrorists,” (Associated Press, Oct. 3)  “Homeland Security ‘Fusion’ Centers Spy on Citizens, Produce ‘Shoddy’ Work, Report Says” (Isikoff, NBC News Oct. 3).

The Senate has issued a devastating indictment of the massive spying effort conducted by the Department of Homeland Security and other law enforcement against the people of this country.  There has been a clamor from the ground up during the past years demanding that action be taken to stop the massive and growing operation of domestic spying on the American people – a threat that the PCJF has been at the forefront of exposing and fighting.

Send a letter right now to Congress demanding that these spy files must be Exposed and Expunged. Join with the thousands who have taken part in this campaign. A broad and diverse cross-section of leaders, human rights advocates, attorneys and legal scholars first came together in 2009 to take a stand against this threat to people’s rights and the Constitution.

Yesterday’s Senate report has opened a window of opportunity, and we ask that you take one minute of your time to seize the moment and demand Congress issue its subpoena power to compel disclosure of the massive store of data collection on the people of the United States and to force expungement.

Thousands have been targeted because of their political beliefs and activities, their religious beliefs, their race and ethnicity, or because they inadvertently fell into one of the many broad categories to justify and execute the sweeping data collection programs of the fusion centers. The Expose and Expunge Campaign calls on the Administration and Congress to order a complete audit of law-enforcement and military data and record -keeping systems and to disclose to the public the scope and parameters of data-collection on people and organizations in the United States and then to fully erase this data.

Thank you for all your support and work in the fight for civil rights and civil liberties,
